About NoMi Pantry

On June 11, 2019, the North Miami City Council unanimously passed a resolution sponsored by then Councilman Alix Desulme that established “The NoMi Food Pantry,” managed by the city’s Housing and Social Services Department. The pantry’s mission is to end hunger and poverty in North Miami by transforming lives by promoting healthy eating and nutritious education.

The City of North Miami’s NoMi Food Pantry became the home of the first government-sponsored food pantry in the state of Florida. The pantry is the first of its kind, which created a partnership among the city, Feeding South Florida®, and Florida Blue Foundation.

On October 25, 2019, the city of North Miami became the home of the first government-sponsored food pantry housed within a municipality through Feeding South Florida® and the Florida Blue Foundation. Together, these organizations, along with dozens of excited community members marked the opening of The NoMi Food Market with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Community Food Distribution at the site, which is located at North Miami’s Sunkist Grove Community Center. Our History

On October 25, 2019, the NoMi Food Market officially launched with a ribbon cutting ceremony and community food distribution at the site located at North Miami’s Sunkist Grove Community Center. The founder of NoMi Cares, Councilman Alix Desulme, vision became a reality when he was able to secure nearly $300,000 for the pantry’s operation annually through the partnership with Feeding South Florida and Florida Blue Foundation. Today, the City of North Miami fully funds the pantry from its annual operating budget and with the support of individual residents and business owners.

June 11, 2019, the North Miami City Council unanimously allocated funding for The NoMi Food Market, managed by the City’s Housing and Social Services Department. The NoMi Food Market opened with a mission of ending hunger and poverty by transforming lives through innovative programming and education.

This partnership was made possible by the generous contribution of Feeding South Florida and the Florida Blue Foundation. The City of North Miami provided $50,000 in funding along with the space, equipment and technical assistance for the pantry. The State of Florida provided $50,000 in grant funding and the Florida Blue Foundation provided a yearly grant of $200,000 to the pantry for two years.

In March 2020, due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic (coronavirus), the City of North Miami sought to independently expand the reach of the pantry’s services to its residents. Rebranded as the NoMi Food Pantry, city of North Miami leadership moved to continue pantry services through structured fund raising, volunteerism and community donations after experiencing a spike in demand of more than 100% brought on by COVID-19.
